Thank you again for this additional data. I'll take all these advices 
into account when I get a new machine. Maybe I will make a partition for 
TeXLive, big enough to hold my safety nets and thus avoid the untaring 
time (I do occasional taring of the texlive directory anyway, as TeX is 
the main tool of my work).
