ghostscript is bad at dealing with things it doesn't understand.  the
default acrocr*p reader on my home machine rejects pdf from current tl,
(though, admittedly, it doesn't actually crash...).

in this case, it's probably failing on some compressed structure.

adapt your pdf(la)tex to produce pdf 1.4 instead, or (as martin
suggested) switch to an alternative to pdfopt.

(or, for that matter, a pdfopt that uses a more recent ghostscript, i
presume.)
