That's good to know.
I'm going to investigate further - having rebuilt the system, I'll try it 
again and see what happens.  Hopefully sonmething else was going on and 
it'll work just fine this time.

The impact of TeX Live on the registry is minimal (uninstall entry,
some file associations, system or user PATH---all standard stuff).  I
very much doubt that the problems you describe are related to TeX Live
at all.
