The difference is that files in TEXMFHOME and the current directory
are found by searching the file system while in all other texmf trees
by searching the ls-R files.  Maybe this leads to different results on
your file system.

You can check with kpathsea debugging turned on, for example

  KPATHSEA_DEBUG=32 pdflatex testadforn.tex
