Larger files offer more opportunities for network problems, AV, and traffic
shaping to do their nasty work, but the backup and recovery mechanism
is intended to protect us from network problems. Running as root:wheel
likely uses a trimmed down path and older versions of the standard tools
(tar, sed, etc.) so could be encountering a bug that doesn't appear when
used from a user command line.
