I hope others can shed some light on the error, but it is good news that you
were able to get updates. Do laptop and desktop use different networks,
or does this indicate a problem with the network on the laptop? In any case,
all it takes is one system that can do updates and you can copy the TL tree
to other machines to bring them "up to date". Even if you use the symbolic
links method on the laptop this will work, assuming you don't need a binary
that wasn't in the original install (in which case you might need to manually
create a missing link).
What do you get if you run the command:
"fmtutil-sys --byhyphen
/usr/local/texlive/2009/texmf-var/tex/generic/config/language.def"
manually? On my system (MacOSX) pdfetex and xetex fmts are generated.
