Surely this is another possible choice, but I see no reason to re-visit the
guidelines each time they get public exposition.

I'd like to avoid a big debate here and now about it, but here is my opinion
(and to be clear: my a opinion as *a* member of the team, not the official
position of the whole team):
- if you understand why it is important for software to be free, I guess you can
understand why it is important to us for documentation to be free, too.
- freedom of the software and its documentation is not a matter of political
correctness, it is also in the interest of the "TeX community" as you call it,
so I think we are serving it by insisting on free documentation. (Though I agree
that this position has drawbacks too, obviously.)
