This is what I do, also. The main difference between MacTeX and TeX Live is
the addition of the TeX Distribution preference pane and associated symlinks
in /usr/texbin; this is handy when you need to switch between TL versions.
MacTeX also sets TEXMFHOME to ~/Library/texmf.
