[tex-live] tlmgr update problem

I ran `/usr/texbin/tlmgr --repository http://mirror.unl.edu/ctan/systems/texlive/tlnet --machine-readable --persistent-downloads update --all` to update my OS X (10.6.3, TeX Live 2009) system this evening.  

While the tlmgr update was running, I started a VPN session, and about that time updates started failing.  I've snipped dozens of lines, but they're all the same xz error message you see following the successful update lines.

What I find odd is that presently `tlmgr update --list` finds nothing to update, in spite of all these failures.  Is the installation in an inconsistent state?  I'm guessing I should nuke it and start over again.
