[tex-live] Why all the foo.orig files in the Build tree?

Hi,

what's the reason for all those $something.orig files in the
Build/source/ directory and its subdirs?  Some automatic Debian tool
(which would otherwise remove them upon calling "debian/rules clean")
notified me of them:
