I assume because your 
	HOME
is set to
	/home/pat/
In kpathsea the TEXMFHOME is set to
	$HOME/texmf
which expands to
	/home/pat//texmf
so *all* your home is searched for directories called texmf.

Please set your HOME to
	HOME=/home/pat
(no leading slash).
