No, because we would hit into the same incompatibilities between
different cpoi versions we have already with tar. And I am less sure
that cpio is present on *all* systems we support.

No, we already try to not use any gnu cmdline syntax. And we do *not*a
ssume GNU Linux/x86/etc, but still some decen tar ;-)
