Yes, I am wrong. pdfTeX gives me this error:
! pdfTeX error (\pdfximage): not allowed in DVI mode (\pdfoutput <= 0).
but what about make that an extension (allow that in dvi mode), or
switch to pdfout=1 before getting the bbox, and switch back to zero
