This is weird because normal commands (e.g. pdflatex) work fine:
pdflatex amshelp.tex
This is pdfTeXk, Version 3.1415926-1.40.9 (Web2C 7.5.7)
[...]
(/usr/share/texlive-2008/texmf-dist/tex/latex/amsmath/amsmath.sty              
...

Notice it found my texlive-2008 stuff just fine.
