Yes, you are right. I was confused with document default settings and system
default settings: if I need particular paper size I would explicitly declare
it in my document.
P.S. I'm writing now small tutorial for our students (on Russian of course) so
this discussion was helpful in either case (We should distinguish carefully
system and document settings and defaults).
