This effect is completely unrelated with epstopdf. For safety reasons, 
recent versions of (pdf)latex do not allow calling remote programs. In 
your case, the convert command is not started at al, resulting in a 
missing png file. You have to use the option -shell-escape when tex-ing 
(see "latex --help", "enable \write18{...}").
