[tex-live] pdftex "bug" (?) on powerpc mac

I finally turns out that the OP had a weird installation with a pdftex
1.40.7 from he don't remember where hanging. Now that he got rid of it
and installed a clean TL'08, everything works ok for him.

So, case closed. And sorry for the false alarm.
