AFAIK, it is either possible to include pdfs without any problem, or it
always results in \HUGE files.

The last idea is that the OP might be running a pre-release version of
pdftex which has the LFS problem, while the current doesn't have it any
more.

Anyway, good to know that it's not brokent everywhere :-)
