He'll be on SPARC, I'm sure. This looks like the LFS bug, and will  
normally manifest itself only on big-endian architectures; little- 
endian ones get away with the mismatched types, at least in simple  
cases with small files. (I suspect they'd also break if they really  
were to encounter a LARGE pdf file.)
