it wasn't thaaaat bad -- the installation took (slightly;) less than 60 minutes,
but still far too long (and far too noisy for the DVD drives seeking all time:(

for my desktop PC (AMD64 suse 10.1) it's

    real    55m51.797s
    user    1m16.849s
    sys     0m35.702s

    root at atuin ~ # du -s /usr/local/texlive/2008/
    1854316 /usr/local/texlive/2008/


and on the IBM/Lenovo T61p it's almost identical:

        3226.726 53m46.726s real,       86.973 user,    54.819 sys,     4.39 cpu

	harald root > du -s /usr/local/texlive/2008/
	1898232 /usr/local/texlive/2008/

yea, the huge directory tree is only a problem for [optical] drives
with very large seek times.  keeping the iso image on a real hard disk
(or even better on a usb stick or other solid state disk) completely
avoids those directory seek issues.

will all the files be copied on a file by file basis ? the benchmark will show;)
