Hi Zdenek,
the auto-abbrev stuff had been disabled deliberately.  Suppose there
is an option --version and people invoke this program from their
scripts but abbreviate this option as --v.

In a later version of this program an option --verbose will be added.
Then all the scripts using --v will not work anymore.

It's also annoying if every program processes its options differently.
