I just did a fresh installation (rather fast this time ;-)

I asked the installation to install in the current directory (.), which 
it did. This also installed texmf-local in the current directory

but texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf sets the default to

$SELFAUTOPARENT/../texmf-local

which is a bit counter intuitive when the installer clearly stated that 
TEXMFLOCAL would be

./texmf-local

I fixed mine using ./texmf.cnf, just wanted to know if this behavior was 
expected?
