I completely agree on this point. texmf.cnf is definitely not the good place
for this. But this doesn't prevent us from selecting names resembling those of
texmf.cnf, since they are familiar.

On points raised by David:
The fact that the new names are generic is intentional. As a user, I don't
want to set 42 variables for just the pager for all my favourite applications.
But you and Reinhard seem to think it is desirable to be able to override
these generic settings, so ok.

On points raised by Heiko:
I completely agree that specific settings must override generic ones. It's
just that on the beginning I didn't consider TEXDOC* as specific settings, but
as compatibility sugar to be thrown away sooner or later.

What I currently plan to do is to accept PDFVIEWER_texdoc, TEXDOCVIEW_pdf,
TEXDOC_VIEWER_PDF, PDFVIEWER in this order of precedence, and issue a warning
for the 2nd and the 3rd as I keep them only for compatibility and in the long
term I definitely don't want to keep 4 variables for just one function (and
similarly for others of course).

Time to sleep now, I'll do this tomorrow so you have all the night to object
if you want to :-)

Thanks all for your comments,
Manuel.
