Even if there is a good reason to over-ride VISUAL and EDITOR at all,
it doesn't make much sense to have three variables, TEXEDIT, MPEDIT,
and MFEDIT. It's quite unlikely that someone uses Emacs to edit
metafont files, vi to edit metapost files, and Microsoft's flagship
Wordpad to edit tex files.
Doesn't it make more sense if tex, metapost, and metafont look out for
TEXEDIT only?
