note that the inputenc utf8.def has definitions for all of the ucs for
which there is "standard" latex font encoding coverage.  unfortunately,
this misses out greek, since no-one seems able to agree on a modern
greek encoding that works with the tex hyphenation algorithm (i don't
know how it goes with classical greek, a language that no-one bothered
to teach me at school :-( )

so a contributed package that provides ucs.sty .def files that work with
inputenc would be most welcome; i don't know how easy it would be -- it
might need to hack into inputenc itself.

note that there are circumstances (one appeared on c.t.t recently) where
inputenc utf-8 works, but ucs.sty doesn't.
