I just got around to building the final release pdftex-1.40.4, but it
wouldn't generate formats using the svn "Master" texmf trees:

The problem turned out to be a recent change in texfonts.map:

cd ..../svn/Master/texmf-dist/fonts/map/fontname/

Deleting the empty looking last line in vi was enough to get things
going, but the underlying problem is in fontmap.c.  Also, texfonts.map
is missed by the "pdftex -recorder" option.  Surprisingly, kpathsea
loads all the texfonts.map files, not just the first found, so it is not
enough to put a cleaned version of texfonts.map in a local tree, you
have to fix the one in svn/Master/texmf-dist!
