We cannot simply copy things to $TEXMFVAR. I didn't suggest installing packages in $TEXMFVAR. I suggested putting texlive.tlpdb there, just like all the other mutable config files. But I guess it is true that if the packages are updated in the main tree(s), that the database might as well be too. karl
