Me too, no need to think about it now. I can even compile a dump kernel
for my machine and compile it there.

But I must honesly say I don't see ANY reason for a difference on which
KERNEL the binaries are build. This is IMHO *completely* irrelevant. 

WHAT is a problem is the libc version, X version etc. But please, not
the kernel... why should it?

If it is only the libs I can trivially install an etch or sarge chroot
and build it there. That should be definitely enough.
