I have used the changed version now on Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris; 
it didn't cause any problems.

By the way: configure does not construct @LIBSDEP@ correctly in all 
cases: Some libs for dvipdfm* are missing. I will send more details 
and commit repairs later this week.
