The ordering is ASCII by default,  but you get a different order if
you say:

    env LC_ALL=de_DE.ISO-8859-1 ls

However, some programs/scripts might call ls(1) but other programs might
call the readdir(2) system function which AFAIK does not sort files.

But you said it yourself, "This alternative seems a bit dangerous..."
