Discovery,

/usr/local/share/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map
/usr/local/share/texmf/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map

removing /usr/local/share/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map
resolves that particular issue, but pscyr fonts are not found because
I deleted th map they are in!

Also I notice that setting TEXMF to:
TEXMF = {$TEXMFCONFIG,$TEXMFVAR,$TEXMFHOME,!!$TEXMFMAIN,!!$TEXMFSYSCONFIG,!!$TEXMFSYSVAR,!!$TEXMFMAIN,!!$T
EXMFLOCAL,!!$TEXMFDIST}

(Added a !!$TEXMFHOME), also fixes my simple example, but will not
find pscyr fonts .
