i just use OSFONTDIR and set it at the environment level 

on windows one can extend that with 

set OSFONTDIR=c:/windows/fonts

.... 

set OSFONTDIR=%OSFONTDIR%;anotherdir 

so there is no need for an extra WINFONTDIR variable
