    Older versions than AR7 will certainly not use fontconfig.

Right.  I had acrobat 5.

Anyway, I think it would be better/safer to link in fontconfig
statically, just as we do with almost everything else.  I am not
convinced that just because acrobat uses the .so that it won't cause
problems for us.

Of course, it might not be feasible, but all we can do is what we can do ...
