Sorry for butting in out of nowehre in this oldish discussion: if
TeXlive is considering switching away from p4 to something else, I'd
like to suggest, among the alternatives to be taken into
consideration, mercurial (hg)

There is some info on how to transition from BitKeeper to Hg here

Some of it might apply to p4 -> hg too.
