forces sounds bit hopeless -) i can understand why organizations want some uniformity; it's not new and dates back to mainframe times; however, nowadays one can use vm's which is what i happily do

on the other hand, given that one favourite editor is available, nowadays there for most users it does not make much difference (firefox, open office, thunderbird, acrobat, ... it all runs on lin/win/mac) so ...; ok, gs has different gui's but that's less important

with regards to tex and tex related workflows, most tools that make sense (for me) run on all platforms, so one can choose the platform that one feels most comfortable with i.e gives one the best user experience;  

i think that the most noticable platform related tex thing currently is xetex, because it hooks into system fonts, and that's a rather os dependent issue (what fonts one gets, what support is provided, what quality is rendered, etc)
