    Will not work IMHO: The tpm names are derived from the direcory names
    where the files are located, so we cannot arbitrary change names without
    moving loads of files around. DO I miss something?

Yes, directories would have to be renamed.  I don't suggest trying to do
this on a wholesale basis.  Just that, when we notice that a package
being updated for whatever reason has a name in the Catalogue that is
different from the tpm name, we install the update under the Catalogue
name (and eliminate the old one of course).
