With click-to-focus: perfect. Thanks, Stephan!

With focus-follows-mouse:

  After hitting Ctrl-F, the search box has focus so that you can type
  the search text. Fine. Then, if you hit Enter several times so that
  xdvi starts searching again from the top of the file, the search box
  loses the focus, but I suppose that's not a surprise for people who
  use focus-follows-mouse mode (because xdvi showed a new dialog box in
  the meantime asking whether to wrap-around the search).
