OK. But a "make install" installs a fmtutil.cnf in texmf that  
contains lines like:

xmltex		pdfetex	language.dat	&latex xmltex.ini
pdfxmltex	pdfetex	language.dat	&pdflatex pdfxmltex.ini
jadetex		pdfetex	language.dat	&latex jadetex.ini
pdfjadetex	pdfetex	language.dat	&pdflatex pdfjadetex.ini

So, there, pdfetex is still mentioned. No harm done, I guess, because  
pfdetex is a symlink to pdftex.

Any reason except taste that pdftex instead of pdfetex became the  
basis and pdfetex the symlink instead of the other way around as it  
used to be?
