I also installed the 20050923 TL test on Windows XP Pro SP2, but haven't had
time for more than a few basic tests.  I did try "pdflatex symbols" for the 
newly updated symbols.tex (see below, note that you will need to use
ifpdf.sty).



My install experience was much the same as yours, and my log file is essentially
the same.  I changed the default install directory to c:\tl2005.0923, but
noticed that this change was not carried thru to some later menus, which still
expected to find files in c:\TeX.

WinEdt uses the registry to find the fptex installation (see TeXSystem.edt).  
The PC already had registry entries carried over from tl2003 (fptex).
For tl2004 I ran an install on linux, copied the tree, and manually edited the
registry to set the new top level directory.  The same approach seems to work 
for tl2005.  Does WinEdt have TeX Live support?

There is a conflict with XemTeX, which somehow finds 
  c:\Documents and Settings\<user>\.texlive2005 
(presumably via one of the registry settings).

I'm able to use pdftex and pdflatex, but there was a version conflict
with ghostscript (I have gs8.51 installed) with one of the font generation
commands.  I just replaced all the TeX Live gs bits with the 8.51 versions.
