That is not the way. I haven't set it up yet on TL.

Stop and ask to use the new syntax. altpdftex and friends must become 
unavailable, they will only be still there as help message. Next year 
they can go.

(Maybe something likewise can be done with the ifpdf mess. Nah, 
probably not).
