    Just for interest: what version of AUCTeX (and probably also
    preview-latex and the corresponding preview.sty, as of the latest
    AUCTeX-11.81) is used in the packaged Emacsen and in the TeX trees?

AFAIK there is no packaged Emacsen in TeX Live.

The LaTeX preview package as of 25 September 2005, checksum 1638, file size
76673, (I'm missing the actual version number for some reason), is
included.
