hermione-e:/usr/local/src/INSTALL-TeX/texmf gerben$ find
/usr/local/perforce/TeXLive/Build -name texmf.cnf -exec grep -H
font_max {} \;
/usr/local/perforce/TeXLive/Build/source/TeX/texk/kpathsea/texmf.cnf:
font_max         =              2000
/usr/local/perforce/TeXLive/Build/source.development/TeX/texk/kpathsea/
texmf.cnf:font_max = 1000

My source directory contains TL2003. source.development contains
TL2004. Why the lowering? And can we put this back to what it was?
