AFAIK, packaging mechanism of TeX Live *edits* the updmap.cfg file. I.e.
if you add a package that contains a map file, it is automatically added
(resp. enabled by removing a comment) in updmap.cfg.

Sebastian, Fabirce, Staszek should know it better, so please correct me
if I am wrong.

Only the second version is what the UNIX version supports. I think that
some version of Fabrice' Win32 port have allowed the first version.  I am
unsure if these version also support "my" calling convention.  Fabrice?
