People would have to use the LM fonts explicitly. I agree, it'd be a
pain not to be able to run
"pdflatex sample2e" as is.

trouble is, splitting eg "lm" into the daily use part and the "source"
part (ie afm) makes
package management and the relationship with the upstream source
problematic. I suppose
I can assume Knuth doesn't care how I package CM
