Buying a machine is no problem. But maintaining it is another matter
altogether. One of the principal advantages of using an existing
hosting facility is that there are people paid to monitor it, maintain
it, and improve it, it's not just done on a volunteer basis. That's
what we're doing now, and while it obviously works well enough to get
workk done, none of us have time or ever will have time to build a real
community infrastructure. Nor do I see any reason why we should
reimplement when there are so many choices already out there.
As I wrote earlier today, to my mind the determining factor is whether
the slowness to India is acceptable to the people who do actually lots
of source checkins and updates. If it is, then we're done - let's use
sarovar. If it isn't, then we might as well compare opendarwin and
berlios, having come this far.
