... which was invalid

mf and mf-nowin produces same error,
and created .tfm and gf, which also were invalid.

I tried TL8 binaries, as well as binaries built with gcc 2.95.3, gcc 3.3, and 3.3.1
on the following systems/platforms:
SunOS 5.7 Generic_106541-26 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-5_10
SunOS 5.6 Generic_105181-28 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-Enterprise
SunOS 5.6 Generic_105181-17 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-5_10
SunOS 5.5.1 Generic_103640-31 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-1

In all cases TL8 binaries did not work, while those
built with gcc 2.95.3 , gcc 3.3, and 3.3.1 worked.
So, most likely, the problem is with the version of gcc (3.1.1 ?)
which was used to build TL binaries.
