[tex-live] TL7: MonTeX problems on Linux

As usual, I set up TL7 to run directly from CD (image). I use Debian

Problem 1:

MonTeX from TexLive7 (image texlive7-20020604-cd1) does not work. When
I tried to view

I got the following log

>> LR
>> true
! Equation cannot be performed (numeric=boolean).

! Emergency stop.
<*> ... mag:=1+264/600; nonstopmode; input bicighm

xdvi.bin: Not all pixel files were found

Problem 2:

MonTeX (Implementation Level IIa, 02.03 dated February 1999) on
TeXLive 7 is obsolete, the current release available on CTAN CDs is
Implementation Level IV dated December 2001.

Problem 3:

The obvious solution to the previous problems is to place the recent
version earlier in the search path, so I have unpacked the recent
version as shown in the enclosed ls-R file. Although kpsewhich located
the new files correctly, elatex and pdfelatex ignore them. Here are
the exhibits:

texlive@galicja:~/montex-tl7/doc$ kpsewhich --show-path=tex

texlive@galicja:~/montex-tl7/doc$ kpsewhich mlstrans.tex
This is e-TeX, Version 3.14159-2.1 (Web2C 7.3.7x)
entering extended mode

 (/tl7b/texmf/tex/latex/ctib/ctib.tex)) (/tl7b/texmf/tex/latex/montex/mls.sty

) (/home/texlive/texmf/tex/generic/montex/mtdocmac.tex
! You can't use `\relax' after \the.
<recently read> \c@GreekGammaAvailable

This happen independently whether there is the ls-R file in
/home/texlive/texmf or not.

Best regards
