Page 299 of The TeXbook says that
Fatal format file error; I’m stymied.
This means that the preloaded format you have specified cannot
be used, because it was prepared for a different version of TeX.
However, TeX will also print this error message if the format file is
corrupted somehow. For example, if you initex '\input plain \dump',
change the first four bytes of the resulting plain.fmt to "aaaa",
and tex '&plain', you also get this message. The TeXbook should say
something like "probably because" instead of "because".
The METAFONTbook (page 226) has the same problem.
By the way, texbook.tex has 12 occurrences of "symbol font" but
3 occurrences of "symbols font". Similarly, mfbook.tex has 3 occurrences
of "symbol font" but 1 occurrence of "symbols font". Is this an
inconsistency in terminology?

Is "o" absent from the list?
