Both pdftex and pdfetex compiled from the current sources (TeX Live depot)
say:
This is pdfeTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.20a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.3)

In fact, pdftex is linked to pdfetex, so the banner and --version are OK.
