Aha - I had thought you were in favour of such library solutions
(precisely because of libwww, etc. ;-)
I hadn't looked too closely into libgz. If it can't handle bz2
(as indeed seems to be the case), and if there are no other
libraries that can handle all common compression formats, we
might prefer sticking to the executable solution. Mixing both
approaches (library for .gz, forking for .bz2) will only
needlessly increase the overall complexity of the program.
